Release from the PCP Press Office

On the elections in Brazil

What is at stake in the Brazilian elections is the defence of democracy and Brazil’s sovereignty, the continuation and deepening of a path towards liberty, rights and development, a path championed by Lula da Silva and Brazil’s democratic and progressive forces, or the imposition of a reactionary, putschist, fascistic agenda, subservient to and supported by US imperialism, spearheaded by Flávio Bolsonaro and the profoundly anti-democratic and anti-patriotic interests he represents.

The PCP denounces and condemns the undisguised and unacceptable pressure and interference by the US Trump Administration, which seeks to create the conditions to subjugate Brazil to its own interests, to dominate its vast resources, to place the country at the service of its aims of neo-colonial domination of Latin America and the Caribbean, aims which threaten and undermine the peace, sovereignty and rights of the peoples of this region.

The PCP welcomes with confidence the candidacy of Lula da Silva and the Brazilian democratic and progressive forces which are committed with conviction and converge to secure Lula da Silva’s victory in the second round of the presidential elections to be held on October 25, a candidacy that embodies hope and the path to a better life, to sovereignty, liberty, democracy, development, justice and social progress, to security and peace, to which the Brazilian workers and people aspire and are entitled.
