Speech escrita by João Oliveira in European Parliament

End the blockade against Cuba

End the blockade against Cuba

João Oliveira, Member of the European Parliament for the PCP, submitted a question for oral answer to the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, stressing the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed unilaterally on Cuba by the United States of America.

The question, submitted on behalf of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) group – The Left in the European Parliament, and endorsed by other members of the group, denounces that the blockade imposed by the US on Cuba, as well as the unacceptable inclusion of Cuba on the US list of so-called ‘States sponsors of terrorism’, is intended to attack Cuba's economy and sovereignty, causing serious consequences for the living conditions of its population and for its development.

The demand for an end to this blockade has already been voted 32 times in the UN General Assembly by an overwhelming majority of countries, and most recently, on October 10, 2024, with 187 votes in favour, 1 abstention and 2 against.

The measures adopted by the US against Cuba have already forced several companies and financial institutions to suspend their operations in this Caribbean country, under threat of sanctions by the US, limiting the Cuban people's access to essential goods and already generating accumulated losses for its economy in the order of billions of dollars.

With this initiative, the PCP’s MEP questions the European Commission and the Council of the EU on what measures they will take: to ensure that the US authorities remove Cuba from their list of so-called ‘States sponsors of terrorism’; to implement the deliberations expressed in 32 resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly with a view to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US on Cuba; and what they intend to do to defend the interests of Member States, taking into account the extraterritorial nature of the blockade imposed unilaterally on Cuba by the US.
